At long last, here it is. SMTC 1.0 (Mark I), a fully playable Metroid Classic game experience.
There are FAR fewer parade floats and flying streamers than I had come to expect.
Anyway, you can download it here.
As always you can get the latest release at www.g0dsoft.com/smtc/Downloads/SMTC_Release_Latest.rar.
For the love of god, read the readme I included. All of it. I'm serious.
And start pimping this to your friends/neighbors/victims/people you don't like. Get the word out people!
Update: Just encountered a crash. Using the elevator from Ridley's Lair to Norfair. Haven't been able to reproduce it yet. SAVE OFTEN. As in, every time you pass a save room.
Also, the list of known bugs is nowhere near up to date. I'll post a new one soon.
Update 2: Patched a crash issue in Tourian. Please download the zip/rar again if you got it earlier this afternoon.
Update 3: If you are experiencing a crash in the Mother Brain's room, please try this patch and leave a comment if it works. If not, back to the drawing board.
Update 4: This patch should solve some minor problems in the Ridley's Lair section (and one major one, yeesh). Replace your old Rooms folder with the new one included. Also contains some other minor bug fixes.
FYI: If you're downloading this for the first time, the package is being updated with the patches, so you won't need them.

Lol! I checked it out with my friend. When we got to mother brain's room it crashed, and there wasn't acid in the previous room.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you more about it later.
I'll be issuing patches as I get the bug reports. I'm only going to be fixing critical crashing issues right now.
ReplyDeleteEssentially, releasing an RC like this gives me a whole lot of playtesters who will find and document every bug so I can fix it. There's only so much I can do by myself.
Okay. Next problem. In the green room one room to the right and one above, you're supposed to be able to be able to bomb down to Kraid. But in SMTC, the path doesn't exit ;-;
ReplyDeleteI think it was a secret, because only one map posted it on Gamefaqs.
Entering Ridley's lair, left two rooms, and up one, Samus can't high jump into the room. <_< I tried bomb jumping, but I couldn't get in anyway.
Third problem - The bottom left corner save point in Ridley's Lair has a door error. I saved in there, and the game crashes everytime I try to exit the room.
Finally, I can't get to the top left section of Ridley's Lair, since the only way is through that wall. I know you are supposed to use the fire balls as a platform, but that isn't working very well XP
If you could post a copy fixing the door bug, so I could continue my save file, that would be appreciated.
Also, finally, I tried the map editor on another computer. That makes it the 5th computer I've tried it on, and it crashes. It says that it's missing a file.
Give me the exact text of the editor error so that it might be googled and dealt with. So far, every computer I've tried the editor on has worked -_-
ReplyDeleteThere's no path above Kraid that I am aware of. You might be thinking of the secret path to FAKE KRAID. Fake Kraid is presently not implemented, but it shouldn't be hard.
Your problems have (mostly) been fixed in Patch002. The images\maps folder contains bitmaps of the game's rooms, so if you have a problem try to include a shot of that with the problem highlighted so I don't have to guess.

ReplyDeleteHrm. FileNotFoundException. It's hard to tell if it's something the editor can't find or the .NET platform cannot find. I will do some looking through the initialization and see if there are any files missing. Better yet, if you download a copy of the program from the repository and try to build it, you might be able to help figure out what is missing. As always, the repository is at http://smtcleveleditor.googlecode.com
ReplyDeleteI have put some fairly short and simple instructions on the home page of the project that tell you how to get the source code and how to build it. So, if you can do this, Sudtrap, we might be able to trace down what you need by having you debug it.

ReplyDeleteOkay. I figured it out. The editor worked. Now it's either because I downloaded all the software and installed it, or because I built it and I got the necessary files. Hmmm.. Either way, It's actually nice to be able to use the software for once :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I got to Mother Brain, but it locked up again. Specifically, when I enter her room, it displays the room, (no acid or objects) and then crashes.
You asked for some screenshots, so I uploaded a few.

Yeah, I know that you can use the flaming skulls to get over the wall, but it's such a pain in SMTC for some reason.

This is the Varia suit spot. Samus can't get up.
I'm beginning to suspect that Samus jumped a little bit higher in the original version or something.
I do have a suggestion. You could try DLing SMTC onto to a computer that doesn't have the software, so you can see the compiler error for yourself. It might help.
Well, I am glad you have it working now!
ReplyDeleteI will have to test it on different machines, like you said. Most of my machines have it installed, so I will have to try it on one that does not.
You're not supposed to go over that wall, you're supposed to go under it! Bomb the floors for a bit until you find the secret passage :p
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it seems you're right. Samus jumps about half a tile higher in the original. For now just use bomb jumps (you're good at that, right?) until I can figure how much to increase her jump size.
Salty, did you fix Mother Brain yet? I downloaded the most recent version, and Mother Brain was still locking up when I entered her chamber ;-;
ReplyDeleteI can't finish the game :(
The problem is I cannot reproduce whatever error is affecting you. First, run the game until the crash point, and when it does crash, report what's in the console (that's why it's there). If not, go download MSN messenger, add me, and we can sort it out with more personal contact than over comments.
ReplyDeleteAlrighty. I made an account, and DLed Trillian. Next time you log in, you should get my messages (under Suddy).
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I gathered all the info about the error that I could. I've got two videos of it that you can watch so you can see it happen yourself.

This second one is of the Dos Window that opens.
